TTASPE, in its role as regional manager for Game On Youth sport – an IAYS program – has linked together two organizations who can derive much benefit from each other and indeed provide much needed support for sport for development within the Caribbean region… On March 18 th at the Petrotrin Sports Club, an official ceremony launching the International Research and Development Centre was carried out and an MOU signed between The Academy of Sport and Leisure Studies (UTT) and the International Alliance for Youth Sport (IAYS).
The International Research and Development Centre will focus on creating sport and development programs that are backed by research and evaluated by practitioners in the field. The centre will enhance the learning experiences of students – who will have a greater opportunity to connect theory to practice while analyzing sport and development initiatives worldwide. It will also give those in the field of sport and development greater monitoring capabilities as it will provide necessary feedback to governments and other stakeholders, helping to refine programs/projects and the implementation processes of same.
On the launching, “We are extremely pleased to be partnering with the University of Trinidad & Tobago, we look forward to working together to enhance the field of sport and development that, most importantly, will lead to positive youth sports experiences for children throughout the Caribbean, as well as worldwide.” Fred Engh – founder and president, IAYS.
Mark Mungal, president of the Trinidad and Tobago Alliance for Sport and Physical Education (TTASPE) commented:
“ It is very easy for those that have participated in sports and had enjoyable experiences to talk about the benefits of being involved in them...However, it is not as easy to provide proven researched data. The field of Sport & Development has a lot to gain from this partnership.”
