TTASPE KAO Regional Coordinator Recipient of Sport Award

Shallona Shallowe , KICKING AIDS OUT Regional Coordinator (TTASPE) in collaboration with Randolph Cato, teacher at Trinity College East were recipients of a sport award for "Leading School Development Program" in the sport of dragon boat racing in Trinidad and Tobago at the 2009 First Citizens Sports Foundation Awards function held on Wednesday 3rd March, 2010 at Hyatt Regency in Trinidad.
“This recognition will always be remembered especially since Bishop Anstey and Trinity College East are the only schools from east Trinidad to participate in dragon boat racing. This was also an opportunity to practice the skills obtained from the International Masters in Sport for Development graduate program(UTT). It was a remarkable achievement because it effected positive changes within the school community.” Shallona Shallowe.
Ready & Able Launches in St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Three hundred and forty five primary school children at Jump Rope for Heart Festival
On Friday 19 February 2010, TTASPE collaborated with the Ministry of Education North Eastern Division, the Red Cross, United Way Trinidad and Tobago, Nestle (Milo), Blue Mountain Waters and Glaxco Smith Kline (Ribena) to host the first Jump Rope for Heart District Festival within the North Eastern Educational District. The purpose of the festival was to activate some hype and tweak the interest of the students, teachers and Ministry personnel involved in the program, while providing them with a firsthand experience in a mass participation Jump Rope for Heart event. The festival’s venue was the Grosvenor Presbyterian Primary School, Sangre Grande.
The festival started at approximately 9:30am with a short opening ceremony which gave the Ministry of Education representative Mr. Robert Fortune who is one the School Supervisors within the district and two representatives from TTASPE, Mr. Andre Collins and Ms. Shaunna Thomas the opportunity to say a few words on the program and it` s benefits.
After a lively warm up activity, the schools started displaying their jump rope routines. Each school had five minutes to display their routine. While a school displayed their routine, the other schools observed and applauded the displayed routine. When the display of the routines started, the students had the opportunity to sample both the Ribena and Milo products provided. Nestle (Milo) also provided the students with Milo tee shirts, plastic cups, pencils and rulers. Throughout the day students received tangerines, bananas and water from TTASPE.
TTASPE represented at MTV/UNICEF Staying Alive Behavior Change Workshop.
As a part of MTV/UNICEF Staying Alive Campaign in the Caribbean, members of TTASPE, Shaunna Thomas, Ato Rockcliffe and Atiba Antoine were invited to participate in behavior change communication workshop training. This pilot training session held on the 18th to 20th January, 2010 was called the Staying Alive in Box training. The training sessions focused on getting definitive feedback on the design of the Staying Alive peer educator manual and defining the methodology for using the box effectively which will include material from UNICEF and MTV.
EDASCS HOLDS ELECTIONS
Capacity building high on the agenda for new EDACSC Executives
Saturday 17th October, 2009 marked the election and inauguration of a new Executive Committee for the community based organization EDACSC in Speyside Tobago. The elections were chaired by Ms. Carol Davidson, THA Youth Division Officer, and TTASPE supported the event functioning as technical secretariat. The spirit of cooperation between the members of EDACSC was outstanding and this helped the elections to be free and fair.
The highlight of the elections however, was theappointment of young persons and adolescents to positions of immense responsibility. The group decided to create the new post of Public Relations Officer to support the clubs’ effort to make its mission known and a young woman elected to the position.• More

T&T PARALYMPIC COMMITTEE MAKES HISTORY!
On Saturday November 21st 2009 history was made for Trinidad & Tobago as the Trinidad & Tobago Paralympic Committee (TTPC) was ratified as an official International Paralympic Committee (IPC) member. This took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at the IPC’s Conference and General Assembly, November 19-22, 2009. The TTPC had two delegates attend this conference, Michael Fraser, President and Jennifer Wong of TTASPE as Technical Advisor. More

ST. MADELINE SECONDARY GETS INTO ACTION WITH KICKING AIDS OUT
There was a positive response from St. Madeline Secondary School when a request was made by TTASPE to introduce the Kicking AIDS Out program to students of the school as part of TTASPE’s effort to integrate the program into secondary schools within the region.

Two Form Two Physical Education classes were selected to participate in the sessions, which took place on Novemeber 12th at the school compound, and saw a total of 50 students participating in the sessions.

TTASPE - A PART OF ART WEEK AT SPEYSIDE HIGH SCHOOL, TOBAGO
TTASPE’s Communications Officer, along with colleagues of UNICEF Youth Media, were recently invited to share in the art experience at Speyside High School. TTASPE was expected to host a video creation and sound technology workshop, and at the end of the week, produce videos of positive youth messages – including HIV/AIDS awareness and education and healthy life-style messages.

ICES CONFERENCE AT CASCADIA!
From October 27th to the 30th UK Sport visited Trinidad where an ICES workshop was held at Cascadia Hotel and Conference centre with delegates from around the region. Attendees included representatives from the Ministry of Sport – St Lucia, Ministry of Education – St Vincent and the Grenadines, Ministry of Education – Grenada, as well as from various sporting organisations in Trinidad and Tobago.More

UTT STUDENTS IMPLEMENT KICKING AIDS OUT AT VACATION CAMPS
HIV/AIDS affects over 260, 000 persons in the Caribbean and is the leading cause of deaths in some Caribbean countries, this coupled with a growing trend of explicitly sexually-charged media, makes it imperative that younger and younger children along with adolescents and young adults, have access to relevant and up to date information concerning the sensitive issue of HIV/AIDS.
The case is even more severe in the African region where the Kicking Aids Out (KAO) network was formed. The KAO program uses sport as a tool to help educate youth about HIV/AIDS, and since its inception in 2001 it has grown steadily and as the network grew so did the goal, and the focus changed from not only sharing much needed information, but also to train young people so that they could take the message back to their peers...
